Relaxin is an important hormone produced in the human body which is mainly related to pregnancy and other reproductive functions in females. This hormone also has a persistent effect on the body’s skeletal and joint system, lengthening ligaments and consequently leading to pregnancy joint pain.
Do note however that pregnancy can and most likely will, result in additional issues that may exacerbate your joint pain, including natural weight gain, nutritional deficiencies and general stress, discomfort, sleeping in awkward poses and so on.

Joint Pain & Relaxin:
Women often suffer from Joint problems and issues within their pregnancy and sometimes after childbirth. The reason mainly is all the hormonal changes that happen inside a female body during those 9 months.
Gaining extra mass during and after pregnancy naturally puts extra pressure on women’s joints, causing excessive discomfort, stress and strains. Moreover the body posture of most pregnant women becomes poor as weight changes happen. There is a natural change in the gravitational center because of the baby’s growth inside the uterus and this changed posture also worsens pain in joints.
As for relaxin, even though it’s a hormone that aids women during pregnancy by easing their pain, it’s excess in the body affects muscles, tendons and joints, leading to extended ligaments, which hold your joints together. This in effect causes pain, and it is most commonly experienced in pelvic joints.
RA & Relaxin:
Misbalanced levels of relaxin in the body can also make an existing Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) condition worse. Females that already had RA reported that their joint condition grew worse after childbirth, especially through the 2nd week of their menstrual cycle. That’s when the hormones hit their lowest levels.
Hormonal changes with age are also responsible for RA issues and menopause is also a concern when it comes to pain in joints.
Some common side effects of RA are:
- Constant headaches.
- Breast swelling.
- Sever mood swings.
- Hormonal imbalance.
Treatments and Remedies:
There are a few treatments that can get a woman’s relaxin levels back to normal. Women who go through menopause are often advised by doctors to go through HRT (hormone replacement therapy). This technique has proven helpful in getting relief from joint pain due to hormonal imbalances.
However, don’t undertake any treatment without consulting your doctor first. This also includes different post-pregnancy exercises. Consider yoga to ease your joint aches but ask your doctor about the intensity levels you are allowed to hit first. In case you face severe joint inflammation, do not go for any anti-inflammatory drug without your doctor’s approval.
